The Anglican Chaplain is Rev Catherine Reid
Having spent a number of years in academic study at three universities, it’s a huge privilege and joy to be the Anglican Chaplain at York University.
I grew up in Bedfordshire and later moved to Hull to study BA English. Staying on, I completed the MA Political Philosophy while also starting up an international short film festival in the city (Hull International Short Film Festival). My studies then took me to St Petersburg State University in Russia where I completed a PhD in Philosophy. I was especially keen on the Russian thinker Nikolai Berdyaev and his intuition of freedom. During my time in Russia, I was a part of the Anglican Chaplaincy and there discerned a vocation to the priesthood, and so instead of taking a post-doc path - which I had thought I would do - I returned to the UK (to Hull again) and worked closely with a city-centre priest to learn more where my calling was taking me. I was later selected for ordination training in the Church of England and moved to Mirfield - College of the Resurrection – to train (which involved doing another MA). I was ordained Deacon in 2014 and Priest in 2015 – both at York Minster. I spent my curacy in Ingleby Barwick, and afterwards was appointed Vicar of the Ampleforth Benefice, where I looked after four rural churches, and had training and teaching responsibilities to new deacons and priests as well as on the York School of Ministry.
I continue to teach on the York School of Ministry and have academic research interests and commitments, especially in liturgical theology studies and Anglican and Russian Orthodox liturgy.
I live very close to the West campus and am married to Andrew and we have two children, Juliette and Alexander.
You can find me in the Chaplaincy Office at Wentworth College and around the campuses generally, and sometimes at More House on Main Street.
Every blessing,
Catherine
