The Methodist Chaplain is Rev John Schofield

Hi! I am John Schofield, the Methodist Chaplain.
While the vast majority of my activities are focused on the University of York, I am also the Methodist minister for three local churches. I have a lot to do with Heslington Church (situated between the university main campuses), being one of the staff there, it being a Local Ecumenical Partnership with the Church of England – so I work closely with the Vicar.
I have been Chaplain for three years now, so have experienced university life before the Covid pandemic, and during the lockdowns. I am married with two adult children in their mid-twenties. York is a great part of the country, and has the buzz of city life while not feeling too big. I have been in this part of the world for nearly ten years, but have also been around Pangbourne/Reading and North Wales – despite being brought up on the Lancashire coast.
My academic background is in Physical Chemistry and Formulation, I was in R&D and worked for Castrol (the lubricants specialists) for years before becoming a Methodist minister. So like my Anglican colleague here at York I am a ‘Rev’d Dr’ (with a non-theology PhD) – but everyone just calls me ‘John’.
I have been trying (and failing) to get to France for the last 5 years, having holidayed, or worked, there almost every year for as long as I can remember. I am a bit of a Francophile, and enjoying the culture, food and wines of ‘Le Sud-Ouest’, particularly the Charente, Gironde and Garonne regions.
The Chaplaincy has an office on the West Campus (in Wentworth College), but I expect to be generally available anywhere on the university campuses, and at More House.
If you want to get hold of me, I can be contacted on:
rev-john.schofield@york.ac.uk (be aware there is another John Schofield who is a Prof in the Archaeology Dept.!)
or 07293 043327 or 01904 861477.
